Berkeley and cities across the country are leading the way in the transition from energy systems built on polluting fossil fuels to clean, renewable sources. While state and federal governments wrangle over how to use market and policy mechanisms to make this necessary transition, local governments and school districts - together with their constituents - are demonstrating that we can make this change occur much more quickly by acting where we live and work.
Local support has already enabled the installation of the first solar system at Washington Elementary School. At 103 kW, the solar system is currently the largest array of solar panels in the City!
You can speed the process of putting renewable energy systems in every public school in Berkeley and neighboring cities by offering your financial and in-kind support. Please go the Community Climate FundTM to find out how you can help.
We are grateful to the following donors whose contributions are responsible for making the first solar project at Washington Elementary possible.
Sun Core: $10,000 and beyondThe Sun Core is the innermost part of the sun where energy is made by billions of nuclear reactions every second.
Sun Corona: $5,000 - $9,999The Corona consists of very thin gas at a temperature greater than one million degrees -- we can see the corona during total eclipses.
Sun Prominence: $1,000-$4,999Prominences are arcs of gas that erupt from the surface of the Sun. They can loop hundreds of thousands of miles into space and can last for many months.
Sun Flare: $250-$999Sun Flares are eruptions of plasma on the surface of the sun. The aurora borealis is a result of flare activity injecting energetic particles into Earth's magnetic field.
Sunbeam: $100-$249A Sunbeam is a ray of sunlight - and a ray of hope!
Sunspot: $1-$99Sunspots are caused by huge magnetic fields coming up through the sun's surface and appear dark because they are cooler than the rest of the surface.
